Hungarians now view Ukraine as nearly as great a threat as Russia

In Hungary, adults consider the European Union (24 percent) and the United States (23 percent) to be their country’s most important allies in roughly equal proportions – as revealed by Pew Research’s new study. This result reflects a general European trend, where in most states neighbouring nations or the European Union are identified as key partners, although the USA is often a secondary choice across Europe.

Citizens of the United States and Canada view each other as very important allies. In the eyes of 55 percent of Canadians, the USA is their main partner, while 12 percent of Americans think the same of Canada. In the USA, however, the United Kingdom finished in the first place, with 18 percent of respondents naming it as the most significant ally.

In Israel, the United States enjoys the strongest support: 95 percent name it as their number one ally – the highest rate among all surveyed countries. In contrast, 42 percent of NATO-member Turkey’s population consider Azerbaijan to be their main partner, and fewer than 10 percent mention the USA.

Ideological differences significantly influence views. A sharp divide can be observed in Hungary, just as in Poland and the United Kingdom:

Right-leaning adults are about 25 percentage points more likely to name the United States as their number one ally than left-leaning adults. Conversely, in these countries, left-leaning respondents more often consider the EU to be their most important partner.
